Anime Con in London?

“Can London have an anime con?”

I’ve heard this question and many who have tried to answer it far too many times. It usually gets as far as “Yeah, I’ll go!” That is as far as it gets. WHY?!

Anime North was created by several Toronto Anime Clubs, UTARPA, YAMA, Ottawa, I think Waterloo and held at UofT. This is back when there WAS a membership to these clubs. I son’t know how many times I bashed my head against the wall trying to get Western and Fanshawe clubs even talking to me let alone each other. Lets face, the mentality at the time was “What? There is another club other than OUR group.”

Just a few years later, YAMA, York Univerisity’s club numbered 8. UTARPA I heard was struggling to keep club status. Anime North became its own entity. Today there isn’t enough people to come out to club meetings let alone show up to SERIOUSLY support working together for a JOINT event which was Anime North here in London.

Now we have cons trying to grab onto the ‘anime’ crowd. The problem is …. the anime crowd is fragmented. You don’t have a singular theme in anime as you do in Star Wars, Star Trek, furries, etc. It’s ALL over the map of gendres and different tastes. WHY? Because ‘anime’ is JUST Japanese cartoons, it a media much like film, TV, music, comics (manga), etc. It’s more, it’s all these OTHER medias, ALL the gendres of film, TV music, comics yet it is it’s own.

It fragmented because no one comes out to clubs. People watch it online practically same time it airs in Japan now.

Yet, everyone wants a piece of it thinking it’s a cash cow that will bring people to THEIR event yet when anime fans do come out, they’re alienated. Told to FIT their norms. “We expect you to come to our con to like our stuff.” The same people who were being judged of being weird for liking some sci-fi geeky stuff THEN now judge those they think are being ‘teenagers’ who are enthusatic about something they pigeon hole into a classification of ‘Anime’.

I remember talking to a parent about why their kids were crazy about this so-called ‘anime and about what Anime North was about’. “They interested in another culture AND tired of the our TV shows which is geared to the LOWEST COMMON DENOMIATOR.” Once I posted the question, “Do you think your kid is the lowest common denominator?” The parent realized their kid wasn’t strange. In fact, the father said to his son, “Well, if you want that wig for your Sora costume, you’re going to have to save up for it.”

DO I think London can hold an anime con? Flat out …. NO.

Not until people start coming out to clubs and those clubs start talking to each other. In a way, we’re lucky we have a store like Neo Tokyo the Anime Store. It’s the only thing uniting the fragmented fans and clubs. The only thing is the owner has enough JUST keeping his store running. It’s not his job, it’s ours. Having been in and running the oldest anime club in London, which is as old as Anime North… getting people to even show up let alone cooperate is near impossible. In spite, relentless pushing against the current. I’ve been waiting for that answer to that question for years. So far at best, all I’ve got is “Yeah I go!” as they walk away or give a dumb or indifferent look.

Still I look forward to that day… someday.

Moretsu Space Pirates

What can be said about a show about Space Pirates? Cute moe high school girls? Maid waitresses? Cliche’ security men in suits? Alot when it’s all in one show.  Surprising plotted out well with a firm premise.  I am liking this one.  You should too. Watch Miniskirt Space Pirates today!

First View – Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown

I must say that Guilty Crown is a better than Code Geass and I can’t wait for Inori cosplay this year. Though one member is thinking of cosplaying as Ohma Shu with the big bad-ass sword.  One thing for certain, Guilty Crown is a tie with Persona 4 for the best show of the fall season. What you think?

Meeting Postponed until December 18th

I hate to be bearer of bad news but our annual Christmas meeting is postponed for one week due to a death in the family.  Sadly my brother-in-law passed away yesterday of a heart attack and the visitation and funeral clash with our meeting so I’ve decided to hold it the following week.

My apologies to those wanting to make our meeting but it was unforseen. Merry Christmas.

Bird is the word … Wavebird

Nintendo Gamecube Wavebird

Nintendo Gamecube Wavebird

Every year, after digLondon, I end up playing more and seeking out more gaming hardware.  I’ve been unlocking more of Super Smash Bros. Melee and Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee.  I routinely check out stores for deals. One was one of remaining EB Games. I mentioned I was looking for Gamecube games or hardware, ie. controllers.  They had the usual third party controllers. The employee said he had one original controller in the back.  I don’t know what made me go bug eyed more.  At the fact, that it was a RARE Nintendo wireless gamecube Wavebird controller or the price.  I had NO choice for less than 10 dollars with tax but to buy it… before it was gone.

SWEET!!!

I got it home and it works more than perfect. In fact, better than wired controller. I’m happy and no doubt our club members will love it come our next meeting.  But now it’s time for MELEE!!!

Today at digLondon… AnimeLondon

Well today was one of those ‘Red Letters’ day. I got to to digLondon way too early but ended up helping one of the exhibitors to unload their vechile and prevented them from a costy mistake of setting up in the wrong spot. They had several LARGE fat screen monitors and display which took hours to setup. Time saved because knowing that the show was upstairs NOT downstairs prevented having to take down and setup … again for them.
The monitors for consoles didn’t work becuae wrong connections. I setup the consoles anyway and waited for AV guys to fix the problem.
The Wii failed to read discs… maybe even chew a couple. I ended making a quick trip to home to bring my own gamecube with games. Including smash Bros Melee and Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee. Both saw lots of action. Sadly I could do nothing for the SNES which it’s cable to the TV was cut and shoddly rewired. I might be taking my soldering iron and tools to fix it properly tomorrow.
Met some awesome people and even James from Hobbystar who was checking out the event. Funny when he offered to shake my hand, I couldn’t. I was playing with a yoyo I got from another booth. LOL There was motion capture display which was awesome. Lots of swag. Got invited to the big dinner and I’ll be back there tomorrow.
Also one of our club members got a free day pass courtesy of us, Anime London, which allowed him to record some interviews for various blogs, podcasts and magazines he writes and produces. All in all, a good day for Digital Interactive Gaming conference, digLondon … and Anime London which helped out. digLondon is game development conference led in November every year.
